Dr Alistair 'Sandy' Dewhirst CBE
It was a great pleasure to be able to say that, to Driffield Rotary Club, Sandy was a valued Honorary Member and benefactor.
To sit with him was to be enlightened to his background and he was always interested I what the club was doing. I was in the Chair when we were looking to raise funds for a second medical scholar who was from a one-parent family. Sandy came to me at the end of the meeting and asked “how much do you want?” He promised me a cheque for £1000 which was delivered the next day and this continued until the year before he died when it fell to £500.
Such was the generosity of the man and he was thrilled to be awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship five years later when again I was in the Chair. That was a wonderful evening when George and Ernest were also awarded Paul Harris fellowships. The Dewhirst family have had a tremendous effect on the town of Driffield, employing many thousands of people over the years and their success in business is reflected in them creating the Dewhirst Charitable Trust which continues to benefit the area.
We, as a Club, have special reason to be thankful that we have been associated with them. We offer to Mrs Dewhirst and her family our very sincere sympathy at their sad loss.
