Stroke Awareness at the Great Yorkshire Show (10th to 12th July 2006)

Driffield Rotarian Graham Hadfield and Hon Rotarian June Pallett took blood pressures on the Rotary District 1040 stand at the recent Great Yorkshire Show at Harrogate.

During their two and a half hour stint they tested 70 to 75 people each as part of the Stroke Awareness promotion.

Rotary and The Stroke Association are working in partnership for the fourth year running to help combat high blood pressure, the single biggest risk factor for stroke.

Each year over 150,000 people in the UK have a stroke. Of all people who suffer from a stroke, about a third are likely to die within the first 10 days.

A further third are likely to make a recovery within one month and about a third are likely to be left disabled and needing rehabilitation.

Stroke has a greater disability impact than any other medical condition. A quarter of a million people are living with long-term disability as a result of stroke in the UK.

The Stroke Association is the only national charity solely concerned with combating stroke in people of all ages.
